How to change a controller on a Data Manager
Last Updated 10 years ago

If controllers or communications modules are required to be changed, follow the process described below to ensure a smooth transition to the new parts.

  1. If the controller and communications module are currently online and functioning, set the “Lock all parameters” on the controller in question.
  2. If the controller is offline, ensure you are aware of the controller settings before getting the new one online.
  3. Physically remove the controller and communications module from the network, by unplugging the CAT5 patch lead from the IP network connection or unplugging the RS485 connection on the RS485 communications module.
  4. Change the controller and/or communications module for the new device(s).
  5. If the controller is being changed, use the controller local settings to ensure the “type” and “units” are the same as the previous controller. If the controller is used with a RS485 network, set the address to the same as the previous controller.
  6. If the IP communication module is changed, ensure the 3 rotary switches are set to the same value as the previous module.
  7. Do NOT connect to the network at this time.
  8. If the IP module has been changed, go to the system front end (PC or Data manager front panel) and browse to service, system, network, remove controller section and remove the controller in question. If the IP module has not been changed, this operation can be omitted.
  9. Physically connect the new controller to the network by re-connecting the CAT5 or RS485 network connection to the communications module.
  10. Reset the controller or communications module (either by an off/on power cycle or by removing the controller RS232 lead for a couple of seconds and connecting it again).
  11. Back at the system front end, the controller will come on line after minute or so. It will retain all of the settings the previous controller had, including aliases.
  12. Set the controller parameters to the required states (not necessary if parameter locks were in place).
